his final months sitting out on his balcony looking out at his ocean and telling stories to his kids. senator ted kennedy will be layed to rest at arlington national cemetery near his brothers. the death of the youngest brother and the american political dynasty has unleashed a flood of admiration. president obama said the lion of the senate passionately fought for his causes while maintaining friendships. >> that's one reason he became not only the great senators, but one of the most accomplished americans every to serve our democracy. >> reporter: during his 47 years on capitol hill, kennedy championed healthcare, education, and civil rights. condolences are pouring into his washington office and flags have been lowered to half staff. >> for me, i lost my best friend in the senate. a great friend. >> reporter: the 77-year-old lost a long battle with brain cancer overnight at his cape cod home. joe biden spoke with kennedy's

widow. >> she said he was ready to go, joe, but we were not ready to let him go. >> reporter: the family will leave the kennedy compound here on thursday. a motorcade will transport the body of senator kennedy to the john f. kennedy presidential library in boston. his body will lie for viewing until friday. the kennedy museum to write messages to the family. >> i hope he has been a strong and faithful leader for all the years. >> the kennedys have left a remarkable legacy to the world. to the world. >> reporter: president obama will speak at a funeral mass on saturday, then the family will hold a private burial for kennedy at arlington national cemetery. kennedy's two sons are scheduled to speak at the mass and the last a months since his

diagnosis have been a blessing because it gave the family a chance to truly say good-bye. reporting live in massachusetts, i'm karen brown, now back to you. >> thank you very much, karen. the museum here in washington is a place where america is most historic news events are chronicle. senator edward kennedy's death is a part of that history. armando trull had a chance to talk about the man of the liberal lion of the senate. >> as news made headlines and filled tv screens, the initial reaction from some followed by the realization that an era in american history had ended. >> he was someone who had strong principles that he believed in and which was unusual for many current legislators. >> he was remembered by those he met during his 46 1/2 yearlong senate career. >> it is exciting. i was in first grade at the

time. it was a real honor to have him come to our house. >> everybody knows him. >> and by those who knew of his achievements of the liberal lion of the senate. >> he led the way for civil rights, american disabilities act and a lot of people that didn't have the opportunity to speak. he spoke for them. >> reporter: some people were harsh over the one event that may have cost him the presidency and a young woman her life. the 1969 accident where a woman died inside the car he was driving for ever marred his legacy in the eyes of some while others were more forgiving. >> that might have been a shock that brought him around to being the person he became, i think. >> reporter: in washington, armando trull, 9news now and wusa9.com. >> and some say kennedy's greatest achievements were to redeem himself. senator edward kennedy's second home was here in washington.

grace lived next door to him. she says they attended kennedy's big 75th birthday bash in his backyard. she also told us senator kennedy was a devoted pet owner. >> he loves the dogs and then one day, my little terrier went running into his front door when the door was open. but he was very gracious about it all and he was saying oh, he is so cute. made a big fuss over the dog. said he is going to steal him or something like that. >> when she went to mass, her church offered prayers and memory of the massachusetts senator. local members of congress are also remembering senator kennedy tonight. maryland senator released a statement saying quote, senator kennedy drew people to him because he truly liked people and was genuinely interested in their lives. he brought out the best in those around him. house majority leader called edward kennedy one of the most dynamic and influential

legislators in our nation's history. and his legacy will live on in the work of the colleagues he inspired and in the lives of the millions of americans for whom his passion for social justice made a difference. >> senator kennedy said guaranteeing healthcare for all americans was the cause of his life. he died with the future of health reform still in doubt. but bruce leshan is live on capitol hill where a lot of people are saying bruce, that even in his passing, the senator may have given that effort new momentum. >> reporter: that's right, audrey. senator byrd of west virginia said you could look at any era in the history of congress and senator kennedy would have stood out as one of the great senators. part of that was his ability to reach across the aisle to get bills passed. the kennedy family has designated his washington office as one place to leave tributes.

jessica ellis wants her three sons to honor the lion of the democratic party. >> he went through more in his lifetime than most of us are asked to endure. >> reporter: one of kennedy's greatest passions was to secure healthcare for people like abby, a young woman. she was two months shy of earning health insurance when she was diagnosed with a tumor. >> fast forward. surgery is done and i'm healthy and i have a bill for $12,000 that i can't afford. my parents had to refinance their home to help me pay off my debt. >> reporter: maryland's chris is one of the democratic leaders of the effort to pass health reform. >> i believe that if kennedy were in the senate today and really able to work and be able to work it for many weeks, we would have seen more progress in the senate. >> reporter: the controversy over the healthcare overhaul

was rockous in resten. >> these folks are not from the eighth district. they really don't belong here and i'm going to ask them to leave. >> reporter: congressman jim moran suspects that kennedy's passing may help quiet the anger and smooth the passage of the bills. >> he needs to get his bill enacted. it needs to be named after him and that should be the legacy he leaves for future generations. >> reporter: moran says one of the things he will always remember about senator kennedy is the kind of bows rouse late night phone calls between a couple irish catholics from massachusetts. it was really that ability in part to both josh and really get things done. it made him such an effective senator. we are going to have to wait and see whether the president can pass health reform without him. audrey. >> bruce, thank you very much for that. senator ted kennedy spent his last 15 months suffering from

brain cancer. he never gave up fighting for the causes he believed in. kathryn brown has more on that in the senator's final year. in the last year of his life, senator ted kennedy looked to the future. >> the hope rises again and the dream lives on. >> august 25, 2008, three months after being diagnosed with a brain tumor, kennedy made a surprise appearance at the democratic national convention and spoke of his mission. >> every american north, south, east, west, young, old, will have decent, quality healthcare as a fundamental right and not a privilege. >> reporter: he looked cheerful as he attended president obama's inauguration, but suffered a seizure later that day. >> i look forward to being part of the team. >> reporter: in february, he came to the floor to cast a single floor on the economic stimulous bill.

then in march, he arrived to a standing ovation. the senator celebrated his 77th birthday at the kennedy center in washington. his wife, vicki by his side. in april, the die hard red sox fan threw out a ceremonial first pitch. and made a final appearance at the white house as president obama signed the edward m. kennedy serve america act. this summer, he wrote a passionate letter to massachusetts state leaders. he pleaded for a change in state law, hoping for his senate seat to be filled quickly, so his fight for healthcare could live on. earlier this month, the president honored kennedy with the medal of freedom. he was not well enough to attend, so his daughter accepted the award. kennedy's passing comes less than two weeks after the death of his sister, eunice kennedy shriver. he made a short appearance at a private wake, but was too sick to attend her funeral.

checking wall street for you, stocks didn't move too much today. the dow finished up 4 points to finish up. six companies are recalling millions of window blinds and shades following the death of three children who got caught in cords that moved those blinds up and down. the desk involved blinds or shades made or imported by vertical land incorporated and lewis incorporated. pottery barn kids and ikea are recalling window shades as a precaution. st. georges county school officials say all students were back in the classroom today whether they had schedules or not. lacked the proper schedules when classes started on monday. students without schedules spent the first two days in gyms and in auditoriums while school officials worked to solve the problem.

in other news, a 42-year- old man is charged with stabbing a woman and a child in virginia. jose francisco is accused of stabbing a 68-year-old woman and a two-year-old girl inside an apartment located on glen karlyn drive in fairfax county. this happened yesterday afternoon. police say a neighbor prevented him from getting away until officers arrived. the victims are in serious, but stable condition. sky 9 flew over the start of a yearlong, $2 million road construction project in prince georges county this morning. work to replace the bridge deck is now underway. drivers headed eastbound on route 214 won't be able to access 301. two lanes of southbound 301 will stay open during the project. the department of transportation says nearly 700,000 new vehicles were sold as part of a cash for clunkers program. that adds up to about $3 billion to be doled out by the

federal government. toyota, honda, and nissan accounted for 41% of the sales. the megamillions jackpot is getting bigger and bigger and bigger. the jackpot -- the jackpot for friday night's drawing now stands at $325 million. that's the third largest jackpot in history. no one matched all six numbers in last night's $252 million drawing. 20 players did win the second prize of $250,000, including two tickets sold in virginia. so be sure to check yours. megamillions is played in 12 states, including maryland and virginia. you are going to have to keep doing that forecast, top. >> i would do it anyway. a couple things about danny, we can't get hung up on whether or not it is tropical. it will do the same amount of damage whether it has a name or not. the track is what we are worried about. >> where is it? >> the question is, where is

it going to go friday night and saturday? it could be very messy here saturday morning. first things first, let's break down the next three days for you. tomorrow, not bad. upper 80s, very warm. an isolated thunderstorm possible and we go downhill in a hurry. 80 on friday with showers and thunderstorms. showers and thunderstorms are a good bet on friday. there's a cold front to the west in addition to danny trying to approach from the southeast. kind of in the middle. it depends on whether or not that includes heavy rain and wind, depending on where danny goes. all right. here's where danny is going to be around friday afternoon. right now it has winds at 45 miles per hour. gusts to 58 and it is moving off to the west, northwest at 10 miles an hour. this is the track from the hurricane center. we can't focus on the line. by 2:00 p.m. saturday, it could be a hurricane. essentially off the delmarva coast, it recurves back up to

the north. now the question is, could it track a little further west and that is the key. this is the old spaghetti plot. we showed you this with bill. the models agree with one another. they go apart, not so much agreement. most of the models keeping this offshore. there's one outlier that takes it east of norfolk and east of ocean city. if this were the case, this would be massive rain for us here in the metro area. a lot of beach erosion and tropical storm forced winds. we will keep a close eye on this as it becomes to curve around. if it curves around in time, we will be just fine. partly cloudy, not as comfortable. 66 to 72. temperatures right now, upper 80s, 87 in gaithersburg. most areas did touch 90 today. 88 in woodbridge. tomorrow morning, partly cloudy and warm. by afternoon, partly sunny, very warm, maybe an isolated thunderstorm. that's about it.

high temperatures in the upper 80s. satellite picture, there's our front. it's going to go through boston. we get into the nighttime hours and go through here friday night and saturday morning. here is our friend out to the southeast of us. that is danny and again, it is a tropical storm right now and is pushing off to the west, northwest. we will keep an eye on it. for tonight, we are okay. tomorrow, generally okay. when the front gets close on friday and danny approaches, things get messy. next seven days, isolated storm and we are not talking about danny schneider here, we have a redskin game friday night. could be a mess. at the very least, it's going to have showers and 83 on saturday. more showers, perhaps heavy rain. leftover thunderstorm on sunday and right on cue, it gets cooler as we go into september. tuesday is 77 with sunshine and 80 on wednesday. >> that sounds nice. thanks top. some say it was his endorsement at american university that gave president

to report the crash. what happened that night would haunt kennedy the rest of his life. >> this morning i enter add plea of guilty. >> reporter: kennedy's name would be floated for a possible presidential candidate. in 1980, he finally ran. he that challenged jimmy carter. he was ill prepared and it showed in an interview with cbs news correspondent, roger mud. >> why do you want to be president? >> well, i am right to make the announcement to run. >> reporter: kennedy never recovered from that rough start and he dropped out. back in the senate, he honed his legislative skills, formed personal alliances with opposites and forged piece after piece of legislation on racial equality and healthcare. >> i have a voice in the united states senate, it's going to be for that democratic

platform plank that provides decent quality healthcare. >> reporter: as the last of the kennedy brothers, he was the one who walked the nieces down the aisle and stood up for the nephews in trouble. for the kennedy's, the trouble seemed endless. his own son lost a leg to cancer. his first wife went through a battle with alcoholism. tragedy after tragedy struck. when john kennedy jr. died in a plane crash, it was ted kennedy who again spoke at another kennedy funeral. but through it all, his love of politics sustained him. he was never happier than he was in the senate or on the stump, as he was this day campaigning for barack obama. >> our next president of the united states, barack obama. >> reporter: kennedy left his hospital bed against doctor's orders and made a dramatic appearance at the democratic national convention. >> the hope rises again and

second case, it did so when attached to the lap and shoulder belt. so there have been no reported injuries. we do feel this poses a safety risk. >> consumer reports contacted the maker of orbit baby. the company insists its seat is safe and said we took immediate action and scheduled further testing at the same certified test lab. all of the car seats subjected to these tests passed. still consumer report says don't buy the orbit infant system and if you own it, use it without the base. >> in this case, you'll strap it directly into your car using the seat belt. it passed our crash test. you'll need to look at your instructions. you will be threading your seat belt through the belt pack under the carrying handles. make sure everything is pulled tight and be sure it is threaded tho the buckle side and remember, any car seat is better than none at all. >> you don't have to spend $900 for a travel system.

tomorrow, 87. thunderstorms on friday and saturday. how heavy they are going to be on saturday will determine whether or not danny hugs the coast. i think we'll have showers and thunderstorms friday night regardless danny goes. there's a cold front off to the west that is headed our way. satellite picture, radar combined, it is enhanced satellite of danny. it's about 700 miles south, southeast right now and you can see, it doesn't look exactly textbook. the redder clouds or the higher clouds in the atmosphere and those are the stronger pumps of thunderstorms. we are looking at a lot of activity across florida. but this is danny right here. that's what we are watching. again, don't get so focused on, you know, whether or not it's going to be a hurricane or tropical storm. winds right now are 45 miles per hour. could become a hurricane by saturday. the good news is, it looks like it's going to be 150 or 200 miles offshore. that's the case, it will just

affect the beaches primarily and won't bring us heavy rain in the immediate metro area. that's one thing we are concerned about, or produced entitled flooding in the bay. the headlines are, danny's track is what you want to focus on. heavy surf regardless of the track. the time frame is friday night to 3:00 p.m. on saturday. once it passes our parallel, whatever it is, a storm or tropical storm, we'll be in good shape. the focus on the track, whether or not it has a name. if it hugs the coast, then we are in trouble. tonight, partly cloudy, not as comfortable. the temperatures right now are upper 80s. not too bad. 88 in bell haven, 88 in dumfries. tomorrow morning, partly cloudy. by afternoon, partly sunny, very warm, but just a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm. highs in the upper 80s. we should stay south of 90. next seven days, 87 thursday. isolated storms and there's the showers and thunderstorms with what's left of danny friday into saturday. left over storm on sunday and a
